AIEEE replacing WBJEE for West Bengal

WBJEE or the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination is coming to an end this year and is being replaced by the All Indian Engineering Entrance Examination also known as AIEEE . AIEEE 2011 is not required for this year's batch trying to enter the Bengal Engineering colleges. On the preparatory front, WBJEEPrep.com - WBJEE practice exam experts will shift their students to AIEEEPrep.com for 2012. For students outside the purview of WBJEE, AIEEE 2011 students can do their AIEEE preparation via the existing AIEEE practice exams and AIEEE past tests with solutions.

The general candidates must have to got a minimum of 50% marks in physics, chemistry and mathematics or biological sciences taken together (40% in case of SC/ST candidates) and at least 30% marks in English (for all categories). In addition, candidates must secure at least pass marks in the vernacular (or any other fifth subject.)

Applicants must be between 17 years and 24 years of age by end of the year of the exam. There is no upper age limit as such, except for the marine engineering course for which the upper age limit is 25 years.

Candidates seeking admission to government engineering or technology colleges, and government medical and dental colleges as well as to private medical and dental colleges, must have been residing in West Bengal at a stretch for at least the past ten years. Parliament impasse punctures BESU’s bid to acquire national character

The deadlock in Parliament over the Opposition’s demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the 2G scam has an unlikely fallout — students from across the country apart from Bengal will not be able to get admission to the first Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU).

On October 12, the Union Cabinet had approved the proposal of upgrading BESU to IIEST and consequently the admission to the Central institute should have been through AIEEE. But Parliament should make necessary amendments in the National Institute of Technology Act to make it applicable. With the ongoing impasse in Parliament, BESU feels that the required legislation may not be passed even in the nest Budget session and does not want to take any risk.

“This year, we have no option this year but to take students from West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination - WBJEE. There is a risk if the bill is not passed by the budget session, we cannot take students from AIEEE. By that time, the option of WBJEE will also not be there and we will not able to admit students,” said Ajoy Kumar Ray, Vice-Chancellor of BESU. Every year, the university gives admission to nearly 600 students.

WBJEE 2011 Mock Tests

WBJEEPrep, an institute run by ex-students of IIT and BESU, is introducing a test series for WB-JEE (engineering and medical), AIEEE and IIT-JEE aspirants. The series is designed by a group of experts and the tests will be mock versions of actual papers.

There will be a one-day workshop for students in Calcutta and Guwahati. The event is aimed at developing short-cut methods to standard problems, in order to improve speed and accuracy. The test series will commence on November 14 and will be conducted at centres across India. Students who do not have access to the WBJEE test centres will have the option of taking an online test series with rank assessment.

West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination for Private Engineering Colleges

KOLKATA, India: Opening up a whole new debate on admissions to private engineering colleges in the state, the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) has proposed doling out vacant seats to higher secondary (HS) graduates with 50% marks after exhausting the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination - WBJEE merit list.

The proposal has come with 6,000 seats remaining vacant in 94 private technology colleges. While teachers blame it on the mushrooming of institutes, mostly without proper infrastructure, students point to poor placement records in several institutes.

Calling it an ad hoc suggestion, vice-chancellor of WBUT, Sabyasachi Sengupta, added, "There is no question of supplanting the joint entrance examination (JEE) for engineering courses. But in a situation where seats remain vacant even after the JEE list is exhausted, private colleges may consider admitting students if they fulfil the minimum criterion of scoring 50% in HS exam."

With present rules not permitting admission under two separate categories WBJEE and HS, the state higher education minister, Sudarshan Roy Chowdhury, wasn't very keen on the new idea.

But veering the discussion towards the graver concern of quality, JEE chairman Siddhartha Dutta said, "More seats are vacant in new self-financed colleges, but students may find it difficult to trust them all." Disillusioned by the mushrooming of institutes, Pijush Biswas, a teacher of information and technology in RCC Institute of Information and Technology, said, "The university has extended affiliation to several colleges without a proper study on the actual requirement of trained professionals by the industry."

In addition the WBJEE review committee to oversee quality of education in private engineering colleges is also yet to see the light of day. "There are cases of students dropping out even after getting admission because of a lack of infrastructure in such private colleges," said Biswas
